Steps To Take If You Lose A Dental Crown

April 8, 2022 by Jonathan Angstadt Leave a Comment

You’re enjoying dinner when you feel a sudden shift in your mouth. If you realize that you’ve just lost a dental crown, you might not be aware of what steps to take next. Dental crowns are built to last, but that doesn’t mean they can’t fall out or be pulled off of your tooth prematurely. Often, the adhesive may fail or the enamel supporting the crown may decay. If your dental crown falls out, here’s a step-by-step guide that can save you and your tooth a lot of trouble:

Step 1: Recognize If You Have A Dental Emergency

Often, a lost crown is not a dental emergency. That said, there are many situations where emergency dental care is appropriate:

  • If you have significant pain in the tooth or surrounding gums.
  • If you have a partial crown remaining or if the discomfort is impacting your ability to eat or drink.
  • If the crown is still partially attached it represents a serious choking hazard that should be immediately addressed.

An unprotected tooth can also leave you susceptible to infection or further damage to your mouth. In this case, contact your dentist for immediate repair or replacement. If you do not have a dentist, are traveling in the Lancaster PA area, or if your dentist doesn’t offer emergency services…

Step 2: Call Angstadt For An Appointment

Whether you are an existing patient or new to Angstadt Dental Lancaster, we can fix your crown in a timely, comfortable fashion. When you need emergency dental services in Lancaster PA, we will provide the earliest available appointment to deliver the care you need regardless of the day of the week or time of day. We regularly work with new patients who don’t know where else to turn to have their pain treated and crown replaced.

“My journey at Angstadt Dental began as an emergency. One of my back teeth broke off at work on a Friday morning. I thought I would need to wait until Monday to have something done. Dr. Angstadt was willing to come in on Friday evening with one of the staff to help me. So many of my teeth were in need of help. I was always embarrassed by my smile. Now I have a beautiful smile and am so happy with my results. This practice is family oriented and you are treated like family. All the staff are very caring and helpful. You will not be disappointed.”

Kathleen – Emergency Dentistry Patient

Dental emergencies seem to happen at the most inconvenient time for patients. This is why our doctors are always available and make time on weekends or late at night for patients in need. Being available is very important and we always want our patients – and walk-ins – to feel comfortable reaching out after hours, even if it’s just with questions about an upcoming service or post-treatment care.

Step 3: Rinse Off Your Crown And Protect It

If your crown is dirty or covered in food, rinse it off gently with warm water. Then, put it into a plastic bag or container where it’s easily accessible. Bring it with you to your dental appointment so it can be examined. Ideally, you should get emergency dental care on the same day your crown falls out. The underlying tooth is probable sore and tender (or worse), since it is no longer being protected by the crown. If you are in considerable pain, you can take a few steps to protect the tooth. One option is dental wax which you can also get at the drugstore. Form a lump of wax around your tooth and it will temporarily be protected until it can be professionally treated. Avoid hot or cold liquids and refrain from chewing on the impacted side of your mouth until you can see a dentist.

Step 4: Get Your Crown Reattached Or Replaced

Don’t delay.  If your crown remains in one piece and the tooth is in good shape, it may be possible to reattach the crown with dental cement. Done properly, this repair can last several years. However, if either the crown or tooth is damaged, crown reattachment is inadvisable. In this case, your dentist will discuss your options for both immediate treatment and crown replacement. Don’t wait. Get the help you need to alleviate your discomfort and restore your smile.

How to Care for Your Teeth with Preventive Dentistry

March 7, 2022 by Jonathan Angstadt Leave a Comment

In today’s world of dentistry, there are countless advancements in dental technology and materials: digital imaging, use of dental lasers and 3D milling of crowns, as well as many others. Our office in Lancaster uses the latest techniques to ensure the highest level of clinical care while also providing a comfortable, pain-free experience for our patients.

Even with all of this, prevention is still the best thing you can do to live a healthier and happier life. Since there is no “one size fits all” solution, it’s important to have a relationship with a current dentist who takes the time to understand your unique needs and has the technology to make the process as painless and easy as possible. From home care to the dental office and everything in between, here are useful preventative dentistry tips to keep your smile glowing and your teeth healthy!

Why Prevention Matters

One key reason to maintain good oral hygiene is the benefits it can provide to your overall health. Although your genetics play an influential role in the development of cavities, at-home oral hygiene can keep your teeth free of decay and protect your gums from infection. A visit to Angstadt Dental Lancaster can reveal more than just cavities by examining your mouth and surrounding areas. Some issues that our dentists can detect via an oral examination and digital x-rays include:

  • Vitamin Deficiencies
  • Signs of Acid Reflux
  • Tooth Grinding
  • Signs of Sleep Apnea
  • Oral Cancers

In addition, general health issues often initially manifest in your mouth. Gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease, is a common inflammation of the gums. If not treated, it can develop into periodontitis, an advanced infection that can cause tooth loss. Oral infections that start in your mouth have also been linked to several, severe general health conditions, including:

  • Heart Disease
  • Stroke
  • Complications of diabetes
  • Respiratory issues
  • Alzheimer’s Disease

Catching oral health issues early helps preserve more of your natural teeth and gums. You can also reduce the pain, discomfort, and complications of oral diseases, significantly improving your quality of life and reducing the amount you ultimately have to pay to maintain your oral health.

Preventative Dentistry Tips

At Angstadt Dental Lancaster, we regularly inform our patients about these helpful tips, and now we’re passing them onto the rest of the community so you can save time and money, all with a healthy and beautiful smile. Here are some of the most important:

  • Home Care: Flossing, brushing and using an antibacterial and fluoride-containing mouth rinse are a great start. An electric toothbrush and/or water flosser work wonders, too!
  • Regular Checkups: Plan on getting a checkups 2-4 times a year, so your dentist can help get anything you may have missed. They are vital to find small issues before they are big (potentially costly) problems. Remember, the earlier it's taken care of, the easier it is to fix!
  • Non-Invasive Sealants: Sealants prevent cavities where 80% of cavities start! They're used for adults and children alike, but crucial for children as they grow.
  • Fluoride: Remember this one? Topical fluoride treatment, especially for kids and young people, helps strengthen teeth and helps prevent dental decay in the long-term.
  • Diet: Snacks in between meals should be limited, and keep sugary/acidic drinks like juices, teas, sodas and coffee to a minimum. Drinking a lot of water can help neutralize acids and is also beneficial to general health.
  • Sugar-Free Gum: Chewing gum can help prevent decay by helping to clean your teeth between meals. Sugar-free mints can improve salivary flow and decrease dry mouth, which is a major contributor to dental decay and gum disease.
  • Mouthguards and Nightguards: These are very helpful to adults and children. Teeth should always be protected when playing sports or even things like bike riding or skiing. Nightguards protect teeth from grinding and clenching and can reduce jaw joint or TMJ pain.
  • Find the Right Dentist For You: Choose a dentist with new and improved technology that is current and can help detect tooth decay or cavities (like the diagnodent or digital x-rays) or complete restorations as minimally invasive as possible (like the Biolase Waterlase).
  • Do Your Research: Find a dentist you can trust and feel comfortable with, one who wants the best for you and your family.

Preventive dental care is of the utmost importance for all people who wish to have a healthy and happy smile as well as preserve function. The best preventive care starts before the problems occur but even after improving current issues and correcting specific problems, prevention is key. Our doctors are consistent in telling our patients that “Prevention is KEY to dental care.” This is because without prevention, no amount of received care can be preserved.

Patients must learn for themselves with our hygienists and doctors, in collaboration, what is the best preventive plan for them. No two people are the same and no plan should be either! Contact us at our office in Lancaster today to start your oral health journey. We will help you develop a preventive care plan alongside our hygienists and/or doctors that is right for you!
